Beginner's Guide to Making Money Online

An In-Depth Step-By-Step Guide on How to Earn Income with Affiliate Marketing

This Beginners Guide to affiliate marketing covers the essential strategies of how affiliate marketing works and walks you through step-by-step how to begin a blog that makes money through affiliate marketing.

What is Affiliate Marketing?

Affiliate marketing involves building and running a website that showcases your products and creates content. This content contains links to online stores, such as Amazon, from which readers can purchase products and you can earn income through commissions.

The more visitors you have to your website, the more income you can potentially earn. An effective way to drive (visitor) traffic to your website is through search engines.

The goal is to get your website ranked on the first page of Google for your targeted keywords (e.g., reviews for [product name]). Once this is achieved, a large amount of search engine traffic will reach your website, resulting in more revenue.

From there, you can simply expand the process.

SEO = more traffic = more commissions = more revenue

How to avoid the three most common affiliate mistakes!

Affiliate marketing is a type of pay-for-performance marketing in which one or more affiliates are paid for visitors or customers brought about by the affiliate's own marketing efforts.

Where is the best place to learn how to start an affiliate marketing business… well when you become a member of Wealthy Affiliate you will be in the right place.

But as you look around at the different resources provided to Wealthy Affiliate members, you will notice that some people are having a hard time figuring out what this business is all about. And judging from some of the questions I read from time to time, they are making avoidable mistakes.

Affiliate marketing is one of the most effective and powerful ways to make money online.

This program gives everyone a chance to profit through the Internet. Since these affiliate marketing programs are easy to join, easy to run and pay regular commissions, more and more people are eager to jump on the bandwagon.

However, just like any other business, the affiliate marketing business has many pitfalls.

Making the most common and basic mistakes can cost an affiliate marketer time and money. I have identified what I believe to be the three most common mistakes.

Mistake Number One: You want to make money now.

You want to make money as an affiliate as quickly as possible. Then, you tend to choose products that people all over the world seem to want. These types of products should be avoided in most cases. This is because there is too much competition. And often, the product is not attractive to you.

This makes no sense.

Instead of jumping on the hottest product, why don't you choose a product that you are really interested in? Take your time to decide, do your research, and try it out for yourself.

Do your research and think about how you will market your product. Choose a product that fascinates you. Do more research about that product and find out if there is actually a demand for it!

If you are passionate about the product you are promoting, it will be much easier to market it.

Mistake Number Two: You join a lot of different affiliate programs…

Since affiliate programs are so easy to join, we tend to join multiple affiliate programs to earn more money. Are there any affiliate marketers out there who feel guilty about this? I was the first one to raise my hand…

Well, it's possible, but I think it's highly unlikely that you will. After all, all you do is advertise everything, but none of it is done properly.

You need to focus on one at a time. Take control of the first one and make sure everything is done properly. This technique will take a little time, but always remember… This is not a race.

There is no need to rush… Affiliate marketing is here to stay… It's not going anywhere.

Mistake Number Three: Not buying the product or using the service

Your main objective as an affiliate marketer is to find customers by promoting your product or service in an effective and compelling way.

In order to achieve this objective, you must be able to tell your customers what the product or service is all about. This is most effective if you have personal experience in doing so.

You must be able to communicate with enthusiasm and in an educational way to explain your own experience with the product or service.

If you can't do this, your readers will soon find out.

Before signing up as an affiliate, try the product or service out personally first to see if it really delivers what it promises. That way, you will be one of the reliable living witnesses who know the pros and cons of the product or service.

Your customers will sense your honesty and truthfulness, which will lead them to try it for themselves.

Think about what you went through before you joined a subscription service of some type or another.

If you put your experience in writing… There is no failure.

Many affiliates make the same mistakes I've described…. Be careful that you don't do the same. You don't have to.

Finally…

If you're wondering what niche you want to get into, or looking for affiliate programs to sell, then try Wealthy Affiliate.

  1. Thank you for clarifying some misconceptions regarding affiliate marketing. I know that we frequently are exposed to so much hype from platforms promising easy paths to start earning money online, that our perceptions get deformed. But the important thing is that any person with persistence, regardless of their age, can build an online business.

    Thanks for your useful post!

You are right, there are a lot of advertising programs out there selling affiliate marketing as quick money. It’s not. However, yes, I agree that persistence, patience, and taking a step-by-step approach delivers revenue generating results. Rupert

  3. Hi Rupert. Thank you for another great post. Im just starting my adventure with digital marketing and posts like this are extremely useful. I knew from the beginning that money wont come in a day (at least one mistake I didn’t make) yet I totally go with second one. On very beginning I signed in to all affiliated programs I could find, and obviously I didn’t have time to focus on any of them. Now Im mostly looking into wealthy affiliate, great program with tons of training materials and great support. Highly recommended!

  4. Thanks for the article. You’ve certainly put a lot of information together about affiliate marketing and what it takes to be successful. Reading through the mistakes affiliate marketers make I realize that I’ve been guilty of all of them. Probably my worst mistake is the second one you identified. I’m always joining different affiliate marketing programs. I know now that jumping from program to program is not a good idea. Hopefully, by concentrating on just one or two, I will start to see more consistent profits.

  5. Thanks for a most interesting article.  I have had my website up and running for about six months, and during that time have read a great deal about Affiliate Marketing.

Thanks for pointing out the three most common affiliate mistakes.  I hadn’t thought about these, but they make perfect sense.

First, “ Mistake Number One:  You want to make money now.”  I hadn’t thought about that one:  You want to make money as an affiliate as quickly as possible. Then, you tend to choose products that people all over the world seem to want, therefore too much competition.  Well, fortunately for me, I only choose products that I’m really interested in.

“Mistake Number Two: You join a lot of different affiliate programs”
You need to focus on one at a time.  Fortunately, I didn’t do that, but I can see where aspiring affiliate marketers might.

“Mistake Number Three:  Not buying the product or using the service”.
Fortunately, I didn’t fall for that one either, but I can see where aspiring affiliate marketers might.

I also believe, as you do, that, as an affiliate marketer, your  main objective is to find customers by promoting your product or service in an effective and compelling way.  And, in order to achieve this objective, you must be able to tell your customers what the product or service is all about.

And I also agree with you that the best place to learn how to start an affiliate marketing business is when you become a member of Wealthy Affiliate.  Their training is superb!

Thanks again for a very well-written article.

  6. This is a well-written and excellent guide to online marketing. Even though it is a beginner’s guide, it has the foundational information that bears repeating and reviewing by any marketer no matter the amount of one’s experience. The step-by-step training is vital and it helps tremendously in avoiding the three (3) critical mistakes that you mentioned. Focusing on one platform or program until significant results are attained avoids a lot of the scattering of one’s energy that depletes our effort. I also agree it’s important to buy the product and use it prior to any promotional efforts. Lots of great insights.

It does make sense and it will make me even better equipped to inform my customers and provide content for my blogs, when I get around to doing them. Thank you for clarifying these points and helping me define my purpose in choosing my niche.

  8. I really liked this article. It’s easy to start and want everything to happen at once but I really liked how you emphasized focusing at one at a time.

I began by signing up for a dozen or so Affiliate Programs and quickly realized it is extremely difficult to promoted more than a couple at a time.

  9. I guess I’ve made all the mistakes you mentioned above. And I have to admit that I joined a program too early without knowing what I’m going to sell the first mistake. Some programs require that you have the status already behind the traffic, and you will start selling the next day. That was another mistake that I made; I took too much risk. As you mentioned above, I couldn’t accept that I didn’t open for sale at the beginning and didn’t understand the mistake I made, and so on. Patience and inquiry are the most basic. I agree with you.

If you really want to start your affiliate marketing business than you need to join a platform or a business community. They will teach you everything you need to know about creating and running a successful affiliate marketing business.

As you mentioned in your article, Wealthy Affiliate is the best platform to start your online business. It’s a platform where you can access all the required resources and tools that can help you to build your own successful affiliate marketing business.

Thanks for sharing great informative article. Much appreciated.

    • Hello, and thank you for your support and encouragement. I really appreciate it. You bring up a good point. You need to join a platform or a business community. Actually that is true for no matter what business you are in. In the early days when I was in my early 20s, I used to frequent the chamber of commerce and attend the events in my city to support the promotion of our Company services to chamber member companies.  Without that type of networking we would not have survived. We were a group of 5-7, always adding and losing 1-2 members every six months. The same applies for online business. You need a support network. My article says Wealthy Affiliate is the best platform. Honestly, I have not tried other platforms. It is the best for me, because 2.6 million members joined tells me that it is the best platform.  Also I could not find another platform that offered all the functionality, services and help for the price I am paying.  There are competitors to WA but they cannot be compared apple to apple, because you get everything included at WA, and the community here is one of a kind. People are kind! Rupert.

    • Hello, thank you for loving my post and commenting here. I am sure other readers can get a lot of value from what you have to say. This website is an exciting endeavor and a never-ending journey. I hope to expand my website into the Japanese language as I have been a student of Japanese for 35 years, and heavily immersed in the language, and culture for 25 of those years. There are a lot of affiliate programs in Japan including platforms. But they are a bit outdated because the number of people who can read English and apply the latest trends in Japan is very limited, and the ones that do, seem to exploit the information for personal gain exclusively rather than expand or improve the industry. I want to give it a try, i.e. help Japanese people have a WA experience.  To do so, there is a lot of localization and guidebook writing to do. Even before that, I need to promote the concept or idea of expanding your audience from Japan to global, or it will not make sense to use WA which is an English-only platform. Thanks again! Rupert.

    • Hello, I am happy to hear you find Wealthy Affiliate a fit for you! WA was the first place I tried so I got pretty lucky to find something organized and effective. After joining I tried a few other programs to compare, and quickly learned that no one really can compete with WA on their total package, i.e. domain name, hosting, training, and support, all for the $49 a month… To get the same level of service by getting each service from various different companies you lose efficiency, and the cost sky rockets.  It is never too late to learn. Every day is day 1 for me. There is always something daily from another WA member shares that helps me in my online business. I wish you success in affiliate marketing. Stick with it, never give up, and work diligently day by day and one day you will achieve the goal. Rupert.

The main issue is to really spend time and effort to find your niche and be honest and truthful with your reviews. The most common mistakes you describe will also help a lot of beginners. For me the most difficult part is to find topics to write articles which are helpful and interesting for my audience and I am still not on a good ranking in google which does not drive traffic to my website. One point to mention is that it does not make sense to join affiliate programs before you get a ranking in the search engines.

I would like to recommend ParthaB’s, and Cassi’s articles and JayNiell a and of course Jay Niell’s videos. They help me a lot. Rupert.

Affiliate programs leverage billions of dollars to affiliate marketers monthly and yearly and this number keeps on skyrocketing especially in this pandemic moment where more services are done virtually. The 3 mistakes you outlined are evident and I am a victim of all. But one thing is sure, patience is needed in this business. You can make money as earlier as 2 to 3 months or as late as 1 to 3 years depending on your enthusiasm and energy input based on the resources surrounding you. Wealthy Affiliate has done a great job in transforming me as an affiliate marketer and building an online health shop is just all in my DNA. Your step-by-step explanation of what affiliate marketing is what a beginner needs. And those who have been struggling with online marketing may understand where their problems were coming from.

Personally, your “How to avoid the three most common affiliate mistakes!” reminded me of pitfalls I failed to consider when I was starting out in affiliate marketing. Not taking the time to get things right at the beginning but distracted or lured away by shiny objects is the downfall of many affiliate marketers.

To date, I haven’t really brought my products. Yet, if I write an SEO-friendly post specifically about an Amazon product, I do conduct research and speak from the facts.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading your content and wanted to know do you have any advice on writing posts that have a great KQI, rank close to 100 on SEO, have as QSR less than 100 and have traffic that is >30. I happen to have abided by all of this.

ok on your content? It was a great read.

Don’t really know if your topics are posts or pages butt in four of them I did not find the title phrase in the “ introduction or any subheadings.?unless I just overlooked them. That’s my understanding of seo. Title, meta, etc.

  25. Hello Rupert.

Thanks so much for sharing easy-to-understand tips on getting started with affiliate marketing. Many people getting started in the “make money online” journey do struggle as it`s hard to find clear written explanation on how things work.

Now I understand the three things you mentioned to avoid, but, I think it`s hard to buy all products and services one wants to promote.I`ve not been an affiliate marketer for long, but i realize there are thousands of products to promote, it will be impossible to buy or even use all the items before I can promote them.

About wanting to make money fast, these are people who do fall to online scams, show them a honest program that needs some work, they think” too much work” show them some rubbish “done for you ”  or “make money as you sleep product” and they are quick to purchase only to complain later.

Really enjoyed your post and things explained to the point and in an easy way to understand.

Really appreciate you taking the time to write this post as any newbie to online marketing world will find this really useful.

Thank you for taking the time to review and comment on my post. It is great hearing from you and I appreicate the effort that you took to provide a detailed and clear account of your thoughts. Yes, it is true that it is hard to purchase all the products out there that you decide to promote, as well as impractical. In my case to drive focus and go deeper in my niche I am experimenting with only promoting products that I use. That limits the number of items I promote, but at the same time I get to go deep and develop myself as an authority on those products.

I will write a post on WA blog, once the results are in. Thank you again for providing me your feedback. I really appreciate it. You got me thinking.

      Best regards, Rupert.

  26. Thank you for sharing this insight into affiliate marketing. It is a great way to get started with an online business and even though there is lots of earning potential, it is important to set expectations correctly. I think your advice on limiting the number of affiliate programs is wise, as those can quickly become a lot to manage. Keeping it simple to start is smart.

  27. On this website, Rupert Rogers lets us learn important hints for when we want to become affiliate marketers. Now we have heard from a fair group of people that it is important liking the products or services we advertise, so choosing products or services that we ourselves would consume without ever thinking twice. It is also not the first time we hear that money cannot be our main motivation: we need to have other goals. Interesting to learn that we should not join a lot of programs: we join one, then do it to deepest, then, if the experience is good, and, from all we hear, it will be, we join a second one, and so on. It is really not a race: we should all be interested in our very well selected niche, selected precisely because of scarcity.

  28. I am excited to be part of (WA) Wealthy Affiliate I joined three and a half months ago I  went on Facebook to look for affiliate marketing it was so many, however, when I saw (WA) I fell in love with it, I could try for free to see if I like it, it did not ask for a credit card or anything upfront it has a community to ask questions? and give answers and join the discussion, I love the community you get to meet very nice people and chat with them, watch videos in training a platform that keeps up with your progress and so much, much much more that I can not explain you have to be part of it to see what I mean. stay focus learn all you can, and keep your eyes on the prize.

There are a lot scams out there, and Wealthy Affiliate is NOT one of them.

  29. I have been guilty of both the first and second mistakes on this list. It’s easy when you are new to affiliate marketing to feel like you are going to make money fast and that more programs means more opportunity to make money. I’m glad you posted this article letting people know about these common mistakes and what to do instead.

I agree that Wealthy Affiliate is a great place to learn more about internet marketing. Anyone can try it with a free starter account first and see the value for themselves before subscribing. That’s what I did, and I learned more in a month that worked than I did in years trying to research and figure it out on my own!

I didn’t realize that joining several affiliate programs was not a good idea, thanks for the tips.
I like the way you laid out the page, it’s very user friendly.
